Edible plants

Today we discovered some edible plants in the garden left over from 12 months ago! We tried some parsley, spring onion and there was even a raddish! Two of the girls cleaned out the worm farm as there was lots of rubbish in there.
Next week we will use the worm wees and worm compost to feed the new gardens before we plant.

Happy Matariki!

Let the Gardening begin

Today the Gardening Gang met to prepare our gardens for planting. Look at our old gardens! They are in need of some tender loving care! We had Toni a parent and Christine a grandparent help us. We learnt about what was already in the old garden and what needed to come out. We put all our weeds into the compost bin. We kept some of the bulbs and parsley seeds in our garden shed. We had a great time gardening!

Our Planning Meeting

Our First Meeting

Today the Gardening Gang meet up as a smaller group of the Khandallah School Green Team. We meet with  Callan's mum Toni and Ms Brown to plan how we are going to prepare our gardens during Matariki so we are ready when it comes time for planting. We did a brainstorm together and got given some gardening magazines so we can do some reserch for our own gardens.
These are some of our ideas:
  • To involve other members of the Green Team e.g. Compost and Recycling team
  • To share our learning with the school community
  • To clear out the garden shed
  • To visit 'Home Harvest' in Khandallah
  • To go out on a buying trip
  • To use the planting area in the juniors
  • To find out what is going on in classrooms- composting etc
  • To involve parents
  • To sell some of our produce at the school  fair- worm wees and herbs
  • To learn about Matariki and how it is relevant to our gardening process
  • To clean out the worm bins
  • To display our progress on a wall at school
Please join us or share your ideas for the gardening gang.
